Billboards
depicting Jesus covered with tattoos posted in West Lubbock, Texas in Octorber
2013. The billboard signifies religious ads just like other countless Christian
ads across the state
The billboard
featuring an advertisement for a Christian website jesustattoo.org, “shows a
man, apparently Jesus Christ, with outstretched arms tattooed with such words
as ‘outcast,’ ‘addicted,’ ‘jealous.’” Texasmonthly.com reports that 59 of these
billboards exist within a 50- to 60-mile radius of West Lubbock.
The
derogatory billboard goes against the Biblical law which stated that "'Do
not cut your bodies for the dead or put tattoo marks on yourselves. I am the
LORD.- Leviticus 19:28.
ABC News
reports said not all people reject the message of the campaign. Some local
Christian leaders expressed their support for the JesusTattoo.org and its
decision to use the images to attract the attention of the people.
Aside from
the billboards, Jesus Tattoo also released a video in YouTube as part of its ad
campaign. The video shows Jesus Christ who becomes a magical tattoo artist.
Those behind
the billboards with the tattooed Jesus insist that they are spreading a
positive message, some residents in Texas were offended by the images while
others sees video and billboard as a
great idea, it gave Jesus a modern look while still imparting the messages
taught in the Bible.
What is
happening to the Christian world?
What is happening to the Churches and organisations, are they going down or prospering? Everyday especially in Africa, we hear news and claims of revival, crusade, and reports of attracting more followers but in the western world the birthplace of Christianity, reverse is the case. Church closing, abandonment and widespread of apathy towards religion has become the norms in most European societies. Perhaps the western world are quick to notice the impurity within the religion.
Thus, many
Churches and Christian organisations have changed their style of evangelism to
conform to secularism philosophical thoughts and reasoning. They often preach “Nonjudgmental”
“Excitement” that will tailor their religion to fit the craze of modernity and secular
lifestyle rejecting Jesus teachings of righteousness can only be achieved through
personal sacrifice and effort.
Jesus said
to the crowd, "If any of you wants to be my follower, you must turn from
your selfish ways, take up your cross daily, and follow me. - Luke 9:23
